The province of Cebu will drop all forms of COVID-19 test requirements for tourists, Governor Gwendolyn Garcia said in a virtual press conference from the Capitol on Friday, February 19. This is despite the rising number of infections on the island.

She said that the province would only require a “valid medical certificate issued by any doctor” and proof of pre-booked accommodation for tourists. Once adopted, Cebu would be the first tourist spot in the Philippines to drop the COVID-19 test requirement for visitors.

“We will make it easier for all tourists to come [to] the province of Cebu,” she added.

The governor made the remark as she rejected calls to place Cebu under a stricter quarantine following the discovery of two virus mutations in the province.

“Don’t you dare try because I will not agree, and the Cebuanos will not agree that you will make our lives miserable. Don’t mess with us. We can take care of ourselves. I will not and never again accept a lockdown. I’ll fight for Cebu and Cebuanos because Cebu is moving on and moving forward,” she said.

Garcia said tour operators in Cebu and airlines would come up with tourism packages.

“They will be coming up with packages—four days, three nights—to spend here in Cebu for a very affordable amount,” she said.

According to the Department of Health’s website, Cebu City has the most number of new cases in the last 14 days at 2,404 patients with the rest of Cebu ranking second with 1,081 patients. Two new variants of COVID-19 have also been detected on the island.
