Natalie is a very experiences esthetician & owner of Natalie Marie Skin Studio in Solana Beach. Boy oh boy are you guys in for a treat because Natalie is a wealth of knowledge & as I said, so talented when it comes to facials & skin.
So without further adieu, let’s welcome my friend Natalie to the blog.
♡♡♡
♡ Introduce yourself to The Skinny Confidential audience.
Natalie Prowse: Hi everyone! My name is Natalie Prowse, aka the owner of Natalie Marie Skin Studio located in Solana Beach, California. Some might refer to me as The Skin Witch Dr., The Facial Massage Guru, or The Skin Healer ( all of which I am humbled to be named ).
I am a licensed esthetician by day & a Netflix & chill girl by night.
Seriously, nothing I love more than coming home from a long day of work, taking a shower to wash off the energy of the day, & doing my whole skincare routine. It’s so zen for me!
Even my fiance Dante has a skin routine, but shhh you didn’t hear that from me. ( Yes, men love skincare too. )
♡ What makes for a good facial?
NP: Finding a good esthetician is like finding a good therapist in my opinion. A lot of trial & error but when you find the right one, you just know!
A good facial is having an esthetician who really listens to your skin, pays attention to how products/ingredients react to the client’s skin type, thorough extractions if needed & doesn’t skip out on any part of the face. What I like to do with my clients is pretend that the products are paint & their face is the canvas ( you want to make sure you color it all in ) oh, & don’t forget about the neck & décolletage.
It is so important to realize that our skin is always changing due to our environment, hormones, diet etc. What worked last month might not be working this month. Listen to your skin & treat it accordingly.
♡ How can someone get the most out of their facial?
NP: By using great products! I always tell my clients there is only so much I can do in a session & it’s really up to them on how they upkeep the treatment we did.
I also recommend consistency. If you want results you must be consistent. Miracles don’t just happen overnight. Typically, results can take a month or so… be patient. Trust me, it’s doing its job. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
♡ What are 3 products you love using on clients that are good for all skin types?
NP: No Brainer! I would easily choose Lucrece’s Tinted SPF. Its 18% zinc oxide & blocks out UVA & UVB rays. Zinc is so calming on the skin & the perfect alternative to the foundation you buy from well-known makeup brands but without all the toxic ingredients. It comes in 3 shades. Tinted, Light Tint, & Clear. I use the Tinted as my foundation, it has such amazing coverage.
Next, I would have to suggest Lucrece’s Hydrating Firming Toner. It’s a product that is so universal. Let’s just say every single one of my clients has it in their skin line up & are obsessed. In my opinion it’s the perfect 2-in-1 product, not only does it increase hydration in the skin but it’s very calming with ingredients like Aloe & Spiraea Ulmaria extract. I also use it to set my makeup. It’s truly a game changer!
And last but not least, Lucrece’s Pineapple Scrub. It’s been my exfoliator for 6 years. It’s gentle yet super effective & smells like the best fruit, Pineapple. Exfoliating is so important in regards to a skincare routine. Dead skin cells need to be sloughed off in order for specialty products to penetrate deep into the dermis or they will just sit on top of your skin.
DM me @nataliemarieskinstudio to inquire about Lucrece products. I’ll help you build your skincare routine & check out the rest of Lucreces line here ! www.lucrece.com.
♡ Talk to us about someone fighting acne. What does a good facial look like for them?
NP: Acne! Ahh it can be so stubborn but my one tip I tell clients all the time is to be patient. I know acne can be so frustrating but monthly facials & appropriate products ( such as Salicylic Acid, Vitamin A, Lactic Acid ) can make a big difference in controlling breakouts. Avoid products with essential oils if you break out easily… as this can create more irritation to your skin.
Using LED lighting & high frequency are always best with this type of skin, so I suggest adding this onto a treatment with your esti if you can. I also find as an esthetician that it’s important to allow enough time for your clients skin to calm down before their treatment ends.
No one wants to leave feeling like Michael Myers! Here are some of my favorite at home devices: Light Stim & Celluma.
♡ What treatment would you recommend for someone who has the first signs of aging?
NP: Monthly facials can slow down the signs of aging but it can’t stop it. I mean aging is a beautiful thing so why not embrace it?! I recommend doing a mid-depth peel for those who are wanting to shed off all those years of being in the sun.
Chemical peels are also a great way to reduce the appearance of fine lines, lighten hyper-pigmentation, minimize the look of pores, & even out skin tone.
♡ What is your skincare routine? Tell us everything!
NP: OH WOW! Where do I even start…In the morning I splash my face with freezing cold water. I find that washing my face in the morning with a cleanser really strips my skin of its natural oils & tends to dry me out ( so unless you walk through a jungle in the middle of the night I highly suggest just rinsing with water ).
Next, I ice roll with THE HOT MESS ICE ROLLER, helps me so much to de-puff & it really helps soothe my jaw from my TMJ. I then move onto Lucrece’s Hydrating Toner ( 3 sprays, then pat it in ). An eye serum or cream, hydrating nano peptides from Lucrece , anti-wrinkle face cream & then of course my Tinted SPF. That’s just my daytime.
Night time is pretty much the same except I add a few things. I cleanse with Lucrece’s Thyme & Apricot wash to remove my makeup & then a second cleanse with Osea’s Milk Cleanser. I then will exfoliate with pineapple scrub ( 2-3 times a week ). I spray my toner & will apply my serums ( Vitamin c & retinol ) & then apply a thick moisturizer to lock it all in….But before my serums, I use Osea’s Undaria facial oil & gua sha my entire face while watching my TV shows.
Facial massage always!
♡ Talk to us about facial massage. I love it! Do you do facial massage on your clients?
NP: Facial massage is the absolute best! I suffer from TMJ so things like gua sha, ice rolling, & jade rolling really help relieve the pain. I incorporate Lymphatic Facial Massage in the majority of my treatments.
We hold so much tension & extra fluids in our face that massaging it daily can really help reduce inflammation & help the skin to look youthful & glowy.
If you think about it we get massages on our bodies to help blood circulation & to repair our overworked muscles. Well… we talk everyday don’t we? Our mouths are constantly working out so by massaging it we are healing that muscle. Trust me when I say… facial massage is A MUST!!!!!
♡ If someone could buy only one product what should it be & why?
NP: Lucrece’s SPF hands down! It’s the best sun protection & lasts all day long. It’s also super calming on the skin which makes it perfect for all skin types. It is so important to wear SPF daily to help prevent skin cancer & continuous damage to our skin. I become a real car salesman when it comes to this product. It truly is the best & has worked magic on my clients & their skin while being exposed to the sun.
♡ What’s a book, podcast or resource you recommend?
