How To Cook Kimchi Rice

Kimchi rice may just be the garlic fried rice of the Koreans. Think about it: The most basic of kimchi rice also uses up the same kind of ingredients that you normally would add to fried rice.

If you think of kimchi rice, you have to think of the kimchi. It’s the most important part of the recipe is probably the kimchi and the rice. However, without the kimchi, it’s just your regular fried rice.

How do you make kimchi rice? 

Gather your ingredients first is always the first step of any recipe. If you have the ingredients then you know you can make the recipe. Here are the ingredients of a basic kimchi rice recipe:

  • • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 
  • • 6 slices bacon, chopped 
  • • 3/4 cup kimchi, chopped 
  • • 3 cups cooked rice 
  • • 1 tablespoon kimchi juice (optional for heat) 
  • • salt, to taste
  • • ground pepper, to taste 
  • • nori strips, for garnish

These are all you need for a basic one, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add more than what is listed here. No bacon when the craving hits? Grab slices of SPAM or cooked ham. Chop up some pork adobo even to add to the mix. Want some vegetables to add some color? Add green peas, carrots, sweet kernel corn, or even plain shredded cabbage to offset the spicy tang that the kimchi will give the rice. Are you missing the garlic? Add some toasted garlic chips or bits in there afterward to give it a delicious and flavorful crunch.         

Whatever you choose, know that just like any fried rice recipe, it can be as loaded or as simple you want it to be.

  • 1 Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan or wok.

  • 2 Cook the bacon until brown.

  • 3 Add the chopped kimchi.

  • 4 Saute the mixture for a few minutes.
