Abra town  inaugurates own Balay Silangan for drug offenders

DAGUIOMAN, Abra, Feb. 23(PIA) — Drug offenders in this town can now take shelter in the newly established Balay Silangan where their reformation process starts.

The establishment of Balay Silangan in Brgy. Tui here was made possible through the initiative of local government unit (LGU) headed by Mayor Marcelo Padilla and Vice-Mayor Salma Padilla.

The mayor and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency -Cordillera Regional Director Gil Cesario Castro led the inauguration  of the 2-storey building  that will serve as a temporary refuge for all drug offenders as they undergo the reformation programs of the government in order to become self-sufficient and law-abiding citizens.

Castro lauded the initiative of LGU Daguioman in prioritizing the establishment of their own Balay Silangan. He described the facility as “one of the most finely built Balay Silangans I’ve visited so far”.

Padilla expressed gratitude to the collective efforts of government agencies relative to the campaign against illegal drugs.

“Ang programang ito na magbibigay ng pansamantalang matutuloyan ang ating mga kababayan na nasangkot sa ipinagbabawal na gamot ay malaki ang maitutulong sa kanila upang sila ay makabalik sa ating pamayanan na may kapakinabangan at sumusunod sa ating mga batas,” the Mayor stressed.

The establishment of Balay Silangan in each municipality across the province was ordered by Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council (PADAC) Chairperson Gov. Joy Bernos during the last quarter meeting of  the council last year. She ordered all LGUs to establish their own Balay Silangan within the first quarter of 2021.

To date, there are only four LGUs in the province that have their own Balay Silangan namely Danglas, Tayum, Bucay and Daguioman.

PDEA-Abra Provincial Officer EJ Santiago said other LGUs will also be opening their Balay Silangan by March and April in compliance with the PADAC’s Directive. (JDP/CAGT- PIA CAR, Abra)
