BAGUIO CITY, June 27(PIA) – – As a strategy to ensure food security amid the COVID pandemic, the Department of Agriculture and the City Government of Baguio signed a memorandum of understanding adopting the city of Baguio as pilot area for the implementation of Urban Agriculture Project (UAP).

Agriculture Secretary William Dar and Mayor Benjamin Magalong led the ceremonial signing of the MOU last June 19 at the Baguio Country Club, here.

The UAP is a project implemented in support to the DA’s bandwagon “Ahon Lahat Pagkaing Sapat (ALPAS) kontra COVID-19” or also known as the Plant Plant Plant Program.

Under the MOU, the agriculture department, through its Regional Field Office (DA – CAR), the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and the Bureau of Plant Industry – Baguio National Crop Research Development and Production Support Center will provide farm inputs for vegetables and poultry production.

The city government for its part, they shall identify the UAP pilot areas and appropriate recipients of urban gardening and backyard farming; provide areas for the establishment of community gardens; designate a UAP focal person and encourage the participation of the private sector for the program.

As part of its COVID-19 response, the city government already has the “Survival Garden” project that DA-CAR has been supporting. Since March 30, DA-CAR has provided a total of 654.88 kilograms of assorted seeds that were distributed to 11,582 beneficiaries.

There were also 416 city households that were provided with 4,830 ready-to-lay chickens and 800 bags of feeds while seven individuals and two community groups received 355 heads of one-month-old chicks for their backyard poultry project.

DA – CAR is also continuously assisting various farmer groups in bringing their produce in Baguio through the Kadiwa ni Ani at Kita Program and have been active in bringing agricultural products on scheduled rolling stores and KADIWA on wheels. (JDP/CCD-PIA CAR)
