DFA repatriates 406 OFWs from 3 countries

THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) repatriated 223 Filipinos from Hong Kong and France and another 183 from Thailand most of whom were displaced due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

The distressed overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) were subjected to Covid-19 testing upon their arrival, the DFA said in a statement.

They were also briefed on quarantine protocols before they were transported to designated facilities where they will undergo mandatory quarantine in accordance with the guidelines established by the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID).

The Philippine Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand also evacuated 183 Filipinos from Phuket, including three infants. Two cremated remains of OFWs were also included on the flight.

“Many of the Filipino repatriates used to work in hotels, resorts and restaurants in the Kingdom’s southern tourism center that has been adversely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic,” the embassy said.

The repatriation brought to 734 the total number of repatriates from Thailand since the embassy’s first repatriation flight in April, the Foreign Affairs department said.

The government has brought home an additional 7,928 overseas Filipinos (OFs) last week, bringing the total number of OFs repatriated to 59,041 as of June 27.

Of the total, 53.67 percent (31,688) are sea-based and 46.33 percent (27,353 OFs) are land-based, with the most recent repatriates arriving from Barbados, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates.

The DFA said it “continues to work with the various national agencies in assisting Filipinos around the world in the midst of the ongoing Covid-19 crisis.”
