DUMAGUETE CITY, April 30 (PIA) — More than a hundred barangay officials of Dumaguete City has been subjected to random drug testing.
Among those tested were Punong Barangays, Kagawads, Barangay Secretaries, Barangay Treasurers, and Sangguniang Kabataan Chairpersons.
Councilor Dionie Amores, president of the Liga ng mga Barangay, said any official who will refuse to undergo the test could face sanctions.
This is in line with the advocacy of Amores as provided for in the city ordinance “Institutionalizing Drug-Free Workplace Through Mandatory Random Test” so that barangay officials could set good examples to their constituents by submitting to the annual examination.
Aside from the Liga ng mga Barangay, the Dumaguete Philippine National Police led by Chief-of-Police Lt. Col. Ramoncelio Sawan, Department of Interior and Local Government, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, and the City Health Office supervised the drug testing administered by a reputable private laboratory.
Meanwhile, employees and officials of the city government are also subject to surprise and random drug tests.
Those who tested positive were removed from their positions and required to complete a drug rehabilitation program for several months with the possibility of being rehired once all conditions are met. (jct/PIA7 Negros Oriental)
