LA PAZ, Abra, April 30(PIA) — With continuous assistance from government agencies, the Sustainable Livelihood Program Association (SPLA) of Barangay Pidipid in this town is eyed as a potential top producer of sugarcane juice in the province.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development -Abra and the local government unit of La Paz headed by Mayor Menchie Bernos are further capacitating the SLPA by tapping the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to conduct trainings for the association.
The group is already producing muscovado, a version of brown sugar with strong molasses content and flavor, but they could produce more products out of their sugarcane for more income.
Recently, the DOST Abra conducted a training on sugarcane juice production to the SLPA members and barangay officials led by Punong Barangay Anastacio Ferras.
The DOST-Abra staff first held a forum on Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) to ensure the cleanliness and safety of the produce on the process in compliance with the standards of the Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
“We need to work out on the proper organization of the equipment and machineries of their processing facility to comply with the food safety standards of the FDA,” DOST-Abra Science Research Specialist Aileen Malangen said.
The trainers then led the participants in the demonstration process, from the cleaning of sugarcane, juice extraction using the presser and presentation. The sugarcane juice can have different combinations in flavor such as calamansi, lemon or ginger which are good for health.
When the production is mastered, government agencies and private entities can order this product directly from the association for their meetings and forums, the trainers said
DOST-Abra Provincial Director Ralf Sapi-il assured the SLPA of Brgy. Pidipid that they can always seek the assistance of their office and other agencies in the sustainability of their livelihood as top muscovado and soon sugarcane juice producer. (JDP/CAGT – PIA CAR, Abra)
