CHESS super grandmaster and champion Wesley So has officially become a citizen of the United States.
According to the United States Chess Federation, the 27-year-old So obtained his American citizenship on February 26, at the US Citizenship and Immigration Services offices in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota.
In an interview with the US immigration service, So said that while he is already part of the American dream, he hasn’t turned his back on the Philippines.
“I came here ready to work hard, and it turned out just as I dreamed,” said So who was born and raised in Bacoor, Cavite. “That does not mean I don’t love the Philippines. I have good memories from there. But I did not have the connections needed to succeed in that culture. I was from the province, not a city boy.”
