WHO, DOH look into COVID response strategies of Baguio – Benguet

 

WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific outlines the importance of the government and the people working hand in hand, both in ensuring health and safety against COVID – 19 and in ensuring that life of the people and the economy continues to thrive. (CCD/PIA CAR)

BAGUIO CITY, July 11 (PIA) – – A delegation from the World Health Organization and Department of Health met with local chief executives and local health officials of Baguio City and the province of Benguet  on Friday(June 10) to look into the  best practices and initiatives on  COVID – 19 responses.   

World Health Organization Regional Director for the Western Pacific Dr. Takeshi Kasai and Department of Health Undersecretary for Health Field Validation and Coordination Team Gerardo Bayugo led the delegation in a meeting at the Baguio Country Club here.

Kasai outlined that their visit here is more on looking into the COVID – 19 response especially to learn more on the contact tracing program of the City Government of Baguio as contact tracing is now being considered as the key in responding to the Corona virus disease.

Through contact tracing and surveillance, how and where infection usually occurs can be identified and if this information will be provided to the people, they can make informed decision that will help prevent or suppress infection, he said.

On the COVID – 19 situationer, Kasai shared that cases are still increasing globally  that is why  it is very important that government and people must not become complacent but instead work hand in hand in suppressing the virus.

He also stressed the importance of leadership and on ensuring adequate government infrastructures that will deliver the services, as well as on encouraging the people or every individual to take part by continuing the practice of healthy behavior, not only to protect themselves but also their families  and the community.

Bayugo also shared that their visit/meeting is intended to learn and understand the situation, efforts and practices of Cordillera, to learn more from what the LGUs of Benguet and Baguio have accomplished in terms of COVID – 19 response, and to look on where DOH could provide further technical assistance and recommendation to sustain the good practices of Baguio and Benguet.

During the meeting, DOH – CAR OIC Regional Director Dr. Amelia Pangilinan presented regional updates on COVID – 19 and the government response actions that are being implemented.

Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong shared the city government’s best practices in COVID response and the contact tracing system which is being modelled to local government units to adopt.

Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center Director Ricardo Ruñez and Benguet General Hospital Chief Dr. Meliarazon Dulay presented updates and good practices of their respective hospitals for COVID – 19 case management. (JDP/CCD-PIA CAR)

Bayugo also shared that their visit/meeting is intended to learn and understand the situation, efforts and practices of Cordillera, to learn more from what the LGUs of Benguet and Baguio have accomplished in terms of COVID – 19 response, and to look on where DOH could provide further technical assistance and recommendation to sustain the good practices of Baguio and Benguet.
