ZamboSur gov’t offers zero-interest loans to corn farmers

PAGADIAN CITY , 09 July (PIA)—  To help the corn farmers buffer the adverse impacts of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), the provincial government offered them a zero-interest “Plant Now, Pay Later” (PNPL) program.

Provincial Agriculturist Lindley Herrera said the program was conceived by Governor Victor Yu as a mitigation and recovery measures for the corn farmers who suffered from the unfavorable impact the pandemic since March 16, this year.

Herrera said the good governor launched the PNPL program saying that the livestock owners particularly the poultry producers,  who rely mainly on yellow corn are now experiencing difficulties of buying yellow corn outside the province due to the quarantine measures strictly enforced by the respective local government units (LGUs).

To address the problem, Herrera said the local chief executive encouraged the corn farmers to plant hybrid yellow corn in their respective one (1) hectare farm so that the livestock operators will no longer buy yellow corn from outside the province to feed for their swine and poultry.

The farm inputs worth P18,060 comprised of the following: two (2)  bags of hybrid yellow corn, two (2)  bags of complete fertilizers; two (2) bags of ammonium phosphate or 16-20,  four (4) bags of urea and one (1) gallon of herbicide.

The loan will be paid within 3 months or after the harvest with zero interest.

Herrera observed that lack of capital remains one of the biggest barriers for the farmers to plant corn because they lack  money to purchase farm inputs

“With these package of farm inputs, I am certain that they can now plant yellow hybrid corn,” Herrera assured.

Meanwhile, Govenor Yu is optimistic that the corn farmers will earn big income if they will use hybrid corn.

He also said that the corn farmers are so special to him since the PNPL is one of the flagships program of his administration.

(You are very special people because you are given the opportunity to avail our plant now, pay later program. I have a high expectation that your income will also increase. If your income will increase, the economy of our province will also improve.)

Yu said the corn farmers will no longer have the problem in marketing their produce saying that the provincial government will buy their freshly harvested corn at a reasonable price.

The harvested yellow corn will be brought directly in the corn post-harvest and processing facility in the municipality of Ramon Magsasaysay.

About 119 corn farmers are among the 1st batch of recipients of this year’s PNPL program.  (RVC/GCC/PIA-Zamboanga del Sur)
