Health Secretary Francisco Duque III and “Cake”: A Short History

ILLUSTRATION War Espejo

(SPOT.ph) So Health Secretary Francisco Duque III is trending on Twitter yet again—this time for saying that the Philippines has “successfully flattened the curve since April.” Spoiler alert: the graphs certainly don’t look like it

Duque later took to his own Twitter account to “clarify” the statement. “We bent the curve in April after the March ECQ but we are seeing an increase in cases due to the expanded testing capacity and community transmission as we allow movement of people,” he tweeted. Make of it what you will, but Twitter has definitely been on fire since that news broke. “Duque” is at the top of the trends as of writing—and people aren’t holding back.

Amid harsh calls to resign, angry comments, and general confusion, one specific trend stood out: Cake. Folks were dropping hints that maybe, possibly, instead of a human being, the walking, talking, and presumably breathing Health chief was actually made of cake. And we don’t mean figuratively or metaphorically either; people were legitimately wondering if Duque was actually just layers and layers of sponge cake with human-like fondant covering. What are the chances?

In a polite manner, of course.

Just do a quick check.

Same thoughts.

A question certainly worth asking.

Eep.

We know, we know. There’s already so much to think about and this weird trend will likely just add to your headache. For the sake of your brain cells, allow us to explain: Cakes that look like literally anything else but cake are currently all the rage on social media. Folks have been sharing short videos of a knife magically cutting through everything from random food items to Crocs to every day objects to reveal that yes, it is actually all cake. The trend has been traced back to this crazy tweet by Tasty posted early July featuring Crocs, a coconut, a plant, a pizza, and more—that all turn out to be cake.

Needless to say, the trend has given the Internet major trust issues. Now everyone is asking “Is it cake?” whether referring to something online or in real life (i.e. Duque). The cake trend does take on some slightly stabby connotations in the specific context we’re talking about here—with a bit of “clownery” mixed in. To bring it back to its roots, we round up some of the most mesmerizing “cake” examples we saw online. Enjoy! And trust us, these are actually cake.

Is everything a lie?

Now that’s what we call a fruit cake.

We never knew cake for breakfast could be so horrible.

Someone come hold us, please.
