(SPOT.ph) Macarons are one of those classic French confections that exemplifies elegance and sophistication. You’d usually think of them as the kind of small, delicate pastry that’s gone in two to three bites, with a refined sort of character to them that makes them a wonderful addition to a spread of nibbles for high tea. But in the name of going big or going home, South Korea has come up with their own distinctive version that pretty much strays from all that: Meet the fatcaron.

Also called ttung-carons (where ttung means “fat”), these plumped-up pastries have become trendy in Korea and are slowly making its way to our shores as well, for good reason. They take the concept of regular macarons into overdrive, coming with two to three times the filling which can include buttercream or ganache, fresh fruit, mochi, biscuits, and so on, for a way more satisfying bite with a mishmash of different tastes and textures! They’re usually also decorated more elaborately, whether in the form of extra embellishments on the top or on the sides, or by having a mix of different colors in the shell or fillings—which makes for some serious eye candy. Curious about fatcarons? These sellers have you covered.
