What Is Oobleck?

Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid, which means it is pressure dependent substance. If you apply pressure like tapping on the surface of Oobleck, it will increase it’s thickness. Examples include silly putty, ketchup and, yes, oobleck. Try to pat it and you will see what I mean.

If you want to make oobleck, here’s what you need:

  • A bowl
  • A mixing spoon
  • 1 cup of cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • Food coloring (optional)

How to make Oobleck without a food color:

  1. Put 1 cup of cornstarch into the bowl.
  2. Mix it with 1/2 cup of water gradually until all the cornstarch is dissolved in water.

How to make Oobleck with a food color:

  1. Gently mix the water with food coloring.
  2. Add it drop by drop until you have your desired color.
  3. Mix the water (with food coloring) with a cup of cornstarch.
There you have your Oobleck! Reminder, it gets hard after a while. Enjoy!
