BJMP BARMM: New Marawi City jail now on 30% completion
MARAWI CITY, July 10 (PIA) — The construction of the new Marawi City jail is now 30 percent to its completion.
This has been confirmed by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) – Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Regional Director J/Ssupt Amado Concepcion Jr. during the Kalilintad Andaka (Peace where are you?) program of DXSO Radyo Pilipinas Marawi.
Concepcion said that there are about 50 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) who were temporarily jailed at Iligan City and will be transferred back to the new city jail when completed.
“Ang minimum capacity ng new city jail ay 1,000 PDLs. Kung sakali matatapos ito, ito ay magiging isa sa pinakamodernong jail facility sa buong bansa,” said Concepcion.
[The minimum capacity of the new city jail is 1,000 PDLs. If ever this will be completed, this will be one of the most modern jail facilities in the country.]Concepcion emphasized that BJMP is also committed to pursue its second mandate which is to promote development for the PDLs.
“Mayroon itong sariling court. Hindi na kailangan ilabas ang PDL which is very risky. Maaring doon na gaganapin ang hearings,” Concepcion added.
[It has its own court. There is no need to transport the PDL which is very risky. Hearings can be held there.]This facility has its own training rooms for rehabilitation and livelihood, basketball court, prayer room, clinic, among others.
There are also multipurpose areas wherein the PDLs can practice plant growing and livelihood activities.
Concepcion also cited the frequency of monitoring of the construction not just by BJMP-BARMM but also from national government agencies.
To recall, a groundbreaking ceremony was held on December 16, 2019 with Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM) chair and Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development Secretary Eduardo del Rosario, Mayor Majul Gandamra and TFBM Field Office Manager Asec. Felix Castro Jr.
A day after the groundbreaking, the construction works of the said infrastructure began. The facility is slated to be completed on June 8, 2021 as shared by Concepcion.
The coronavirus disease pandemic has also affected the construction of the said facility. The construction stopped on March 17, 2020 and resumed on June 1, 2020. (LELA/PIA ICIC)
