Public need to stay vigilant – DOH
QUEZON CITY, June 27 (PIA) — The Department of Health (DOH) renewed its call to the public to continue to remain vigilant against COVID-19 as cases continue to rise and vaccines are still being developed.
“We’ve seen a number of cases rise and the virus is spreading in the different parts of the country. And some of the health facilities are starting to get overwhelmed, but we should not feel helpless and remain to be cautious” said Dr. Beverly Lorraine Ho, Director of the Health Promotion and Communication Service (HPCS) of the DOH during the 8th Leading Forward Town hall Meeting by the Presidential Communication Operations Office (PCOO) held on Friday June 26.
Dr. Ho said that despite the increase in cases, the public need not worry much because the DOH knows what to do in these times. What the department is hoping for is “for people to be aware (of the current situation) and remain to be cautious.”
“Paulit-ulit nating sinasabi, that we cannot go back to our old normal. We have to go and live the new normal. Pero, habang wala pa iyung vaccine, we have to find a way para mabalanse ito,” Dr. Ho added.
She emphasized the role of the local authorities as the first responders.
“As first responders, the local government units (LGUs) and the Local Chief Executives (LCEs) should be very proactive and should follow the evidence-based practice guidelines,” she reiterated and that, “everyone has a role to play so that we will be able to curb this rapid rise of COVID-19 cases. Hindi lang dapat chillax lang tayo, but always, we should be very vigilant.”
Dr. Ho also appealed to the public to participate in the effort to contract trace now that the country has opened the economy and cited the importance of giving correct contact numbers to the businesses and shops that they visit.
“Ngayon, nakikita natin, may mga businesses, shops, pinapasulat iyun pangalan ng tao kapag ikaw ay pumunta sa lugar nila, para makapagcontact-trace sila, in case na may mag-positive sa area na iyun,” she said.
She also said that the employers have an important role to make sure that the workplace is an enabling environment.
“Business owners, school administrators and priests who lead the worships, need to continue to innovate, as well as evaluate the risks, and the strategies they use. They need to learn to adapt to the new COVID-19 situation, as more information on the science of COVID-19 transmission comes in,” Dr. Ho added.
“Now is not the time to relax. Yes, we may have won the first round of the COVID-19 battle, pero hindi ibig sabihin na tapos na ang laban,” she emphasized. (PIA-IDPD/VQR)
