FKA twigs’ eclectic short film weaves music, dance, and fashion

FKA Twigs and an ensemble cast of characters stand against an orange backdrop.

Sculptures in kaleidoscopic colors, wool clothes that have sprung straight from the runway, and classical dancing against old-school punk rock: these are just a few of the creative elements that FKA twigs brought to her playful new short film.

The English singer-songwriter directed and starred in the piece in collaboration with the International Woolmark Prize, a celebration of global fashion talent working with Australian Merino wool. Aptly titled Playscape, the short showcases the designs that made it to the final rounds of the prestigious fashion prize, which this year operated under the theme, “Play”.

The film opens in the Noguchi Foundation Museum in Queens, New York, with a set of sculptures by Japanese American sculptor Isamu Noguchi, an experimental artist known for blending modernity and tradition. An ensemble cast of dancers arrive onstage, moving to “He Hu” by Duval Timothy and Rosie Lowe and X-Ray Spex’s “Identity,” all choreographed by classically trained dancer Juliano Nunes. Twigs herself dances amongst them, all donning the innovative wool-based creations of this year’s finalist designers.

“It is an honor to be chosen by the Woolmark Prize to work with such talented designers and to create my first piece of work with Juliano Nunes, innovator of dance for the Avant Garden collective,” twigs said.

Weaving together art, fashion, and music, twigs delivers quite the visual spectacle, which you can watch above.
