7 Upgrades That Make a Home Office More Comfortable

In partnership with our friends at Purple and Cushion Lab

After a few months of working remotely, we’ve discovered a handful of home-office heroes: These are the tools that have converted our dining chairs into lumbar-supporting thrones, the tech that helps us stay hydrated and focused, and a couple of indulgences that make our desks more compelling than, say, the couch.

1

PURPLE REIGN

If you’re still using your dining chair as a desk chair, your body is probably begging for an upgrade. Purple’s royal seat cushion has a grid structure that provides ample support that gently relaxes under pressure—and it’s flexible enough to conform to any hard chair or stool around your house. Your tailbone will thank you.

Align Your Spine

Cushion Lab’s lumbar pillow is another effective way to upgrade a seat that is ergonomically lacking: Just slide it over the back of your chair—an adjustable strap holds it in place when you need it. Places goop staffers have used it include: the car, the couch, previously unforgiving dining room chairs. One editor even used it to trick out an Aeron chair. The firm memory foam contours to the natural curve of your spine to support a comfortable sitting posture (and the removable cover is machine-washable).

COZY UP

We love a warm blanket placed over the back of a desk chair, particularly for those of us whose temperature seems to fluctuate throughout the day. Morrow’s black-and-white tasseled blanket is especially chic (and soft, and warm). It helps us with the bed-to-desk transition: It’s a perfect complement to a cup of tea first thing in the morning as you go through emails.

Diffuse the Situation

One perk of remote work is that you can be entirely selfish about how you want your space to smell. Enter vitruvi’s stone diffuser in black, which is a gorgeous addition to any desk. The essential oil blends help set the workday vibe—we recommend pink grapefruit for focus. And when your unread email count starts to creep up: May we suggest bergamot oil to smooth things out?

Turn On, Tune In

A killer playlist is step one, and step two is finding quality headphones that help you focus and drown out any competing sounds. Kreafunk’s wireless Bluetooth earbuds hook over your ear and have easy touch buttons for music control and Zoom calls. The dusty-pink-and-gold inner-ear accents will make you want to keep them on for midday walks around the block and postwork runs, too.

Bottle Service

It can be surprisingly easy to forget to hydrate throughout the day. Two things help us in this department: a literal hydration reminder and a self-cleaning bottle. When you strap Ulla’s hydration tool around any water bottle, you’ll get a blinking reminder that lets you know when your sipping has slipped. Larq’s design has a digital UV-C LED light to purify the water every two hours (or whenever you press the magic button).

Roll Away

We’re reminding ourselves to take more breaks while working from home—which is also known as living at work. One way to release tension and step away from our desks comes courtesy of body whisperer Lauren Roxburgh: Her equipment is our go-to after long days when our shoulders are up to our ears and our backs feel extra tight. Try placing the Lorox infinity roller across your spine to work out the kinks as you move your body up and down against it. You can also put it behind your back against your desk chair for a gentler release. The pebbled Lorox aligned dome also makes for a great self-massage tool—place it behind your upper back and slowly roll each shoulder back, giving yourself a little acupressure-esque relief.
