Is It Safe To Travel To Spain Right Now during Covid in 2021? – September

Spain has been one of the countries hit most hard by the virus in the E.U. However, infection rates in Spain are dropping down, and traveling there could be safe now if the necessary precautions are taken.

On June 26, the national government lifted the mask mandate for enclosed settings but at least half of the people in the streets still wear it, which makes the country pretty secure.

Latest updates on Covid situation in Spain:

September 12 – Spain no longer at ‘high risk’ level of COVID-19 incidence

On Thursday, September 9, the coronavirus incidence in Spain dropped below 150 cases per 100,000 inhabitants – a threshold of ‘high COVID-19 transmission.’

The indicator moved to around 140 cases, compared to a record 900 infections per 100,000 inhabitants in January. And so, for the first time in more than two months, the country is now considered an area of ‘moderate coronavirus incidence.’

COVID-19 contaminations is not the only thing dropping. The number of occupied beds at intensive care units has also slipped to 13.7%, in contrast to the 21.98% occupancy rate reported only a month ago.

As the country is quickly recovering from the fifth wave of the pandemic and the vaccination rate is exceeding 70%, central and regional authorities agreed to ease down the safety limits at outdoor sports facilities for September.

September 3 – Incidence rate of COVID-19 drops down in Spain

Spain has been going through the fifth wave of the pandemic. Even though the death toll is still on the rise, the number of the 14-day cumulative cases has been dropping.

According to Spain’s Ministry of Health, the rate has fallen by 11 points to 210 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. On the other hand, the incidence in the younger population has declined by more than 1,000 points in the past month.

The 20 to 29 age group registered 1,626 infections per 100,000 people on August 2, while yesterday, September 2, it was just 290. Similarly, the incidence at those aged between 12 and 19 has fallen from 1,516 to 398 contaminations per 100,000 inhabitants.

Is it safe to travel to Spain right now?

The fifth wave of COVID-19 infections is being fueled by the virulent Delta variant and unvaccinated young people attending massive events without following the health protocols, health experts say.

There is no reason to believe that travelers who can avoid these kinds of risky situations wouldn’t be safe.

Vaccination progress in Spain

Spain has become a leader in Europe’s vaccination process. As of September 12, 75.87% of the population has been fully vaccinated.

What is open in Spain right now?

Spain is officially open to most leisure travelers, meaning that most tourist venues are also open. Visitors will get to enjoy bars, restaurants, concerts, theaters, cinemas, museums, and so on.

Unlike other countries such as Italy, Greece or Portugal, Spain does not request visitors to bring proof of vaccination to take part in indoor activities.

Why visit Spain during the pandemic?

August 20 – Spain praises its vaccination campaign for the results amidst the 5 wave of COVID-19

Despite being in “party mode” since the summer started, the number of deaths due to COVID-19 has been significantly less than expected thanks to one of the fastest vaccination campaigns in Europe, say two of the heads of Spain’s major hospitals.

“Without the vaccines, this would have been a tragedy,” says José Miguel Cisneros, the head of infectious diseases at the Hospital Virgen del Rocío.

“We would have been overwhelmed like we were in March 2020 (…) We would have been living through a massacre without them, a catastrophe,” adds Federico García, head of microbiology at the San Cecilio Hospital in Granada.

The government has mentioned that the strong family ties have rushed Spaniards to get the vaccine to protect their family members.
