Mexico Reopening – Latest Updates

June 30 – Both Mexico and U.S. border leaders pushing for reopening soon

Mexican and U.S. political leaders from both sides of the border are pushing to reopen as soon as possible due to economic devastation.

Mexico’s president Andrés Manuel López Obrador said on a recent visit to Baja California that the current vaccination push should help ease restrictions for crossing the border.

For her part, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, National City Mayor Alejandra Sotelo-Solis, Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina, and County Supervisor Nora Vargas called upon the federal government to lift travel restrictions so citizens from both countries can resume travel and help recover the economy.

June 21 – Mexico to speed up vaccination along the U.S. border so they can reopen for tourism soon

The Mexican government announced it was speeding up vaccinations along the land border with the U.S. so they can reopen for tourism as soon as possible.

The plan is to gradually lift most COVID-19 related restrictions as long as they can reach the same U.S. vaccination levels.

“Mexico is going to make an extraordinary vaccination effort in order for our cities to have similar standards to those of the United States in terms of vaccination,” said Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard at a press conference last week.

As of today, the U.S. announced it will maintain its border closed at least until July 21.

June 5 – Mexico City to lift more COVID-19 restrictions in June as the pandemic figures improve

The pandemic figures in Mexico City have been decreasing over the last 4 weeks and deaths have fallen dramatically nationwide.

According to the city Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, convention centers, schools, and concert halls will reopen this month as the pandemic figures improve.

“More economic activities will open and jobs will recover,” said Sheinbaum at a press conference on Friday.

Additionally, the U.S. has agreed to send Mexico one million doses of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine against COVID-19 that will be distributed among those under 40, said Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Thursday.

Local media has started to speculate this may help with the U.S. border reopening.
